which toe? because without the big toe, we cannot walk, believe it or not the big toe keeps us balanced. so i would lose like my pinky toe or something...but no, not a finger

Actually you can walk just fine without your big toe. Your big toe and your pinky toe do the same for your balance. I know this because my father cut off his thumb accidentally and then had his big toe removed to be where his thumb was. He walks fine. He has a slight limp but that is not caused by the lack of toe it is caused the pain around the incision.

OK, your mother is on a ventilator and the doctor tells you that along with her respiratory problems she also has gangrene and they need to amputate her foot. Do you wake her up from the sedation (which prevents her from gagging on the tube) to ask her?
