The magnetic field deflects the solar wind, which contains particles and radiation harmful to life.
Good question and difficult to answer. If life did exist without the magnetic shield then it would certainly be vastly different than what we currently experience. On the other hand it might consist of microorganisms and not much more higher evolved life.
