Matthew, Mark and Luke are called 'synoptic' because they all tell pretty much the same story over and over again. Starting out, you won't see much difference, and will probably get bored trying to slog through them. I'd suggest reading John first, then Matthew, then 1John, then perhaps Daniel from the OT.
John is the most moving to me, but all four are worthy of study.
John is the most beautiful imo. I would go with that one, or maybe Matthew.
If you have an entire month, why choose? Read all four. : )
According to many early Christians the four Gospels were associated with the four seasons. Mark with summer and a lion(Leo the lion). Luke with spring and a calf(Taurus). Matthew with winter and a man(Aquarius). And John with Autumn and an eagle(Aquilae the eagle or Scorpius). If you find this hard to believe draw a zodiac in a circle and mark the four fixed signs(the ones noted above). Then read Revelation 4:7. This is not a coincidence.
So read John. It's the right time of the year.
I like Matthew the best, myself. John is written for all people, though.

You're reading For Christians; I am challenged to read one of the gospels this month; Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John. Which one should I choose?
