Germany has such a system; a government run plan with >200 private insurance companies STILL staying competitive and basically forming a free market.
Since Germany did it, Germany must be Socialist and therefore we have to do exactly the opposite of what they do lest we all become Communists!
I don't believe the federal government even has the power to reform our health care system under the constitution anyway. That doesn't appear to be one of Congress' enumerated powers. Get rid of regulation. Let people buy insurance across state lines, creating competition, and give them back more of their tax dollars to buy it. We don't need this monstrosity. Beyond the constitutional issue, I think most people realize this is going to cost MUCH more than what they are admitting. That's been the case with just about every federal program out there.
Because they were more interested in mythical weapons of mass destruction.
The current mess in place is paying big bucks to Republicans to keep itself in place.
