Is it dangerous nowadays to try and learn about Islam thorugh the people who live it? You never know who might be deemed connected to Al Qaeda?

It's damn stupid to voluntarily learn any of the religions from that stinking desert. The jews, the christians, and the muslims would do well to go ahead and wipe each other out and let the world continue in peace.

Not really. The danger lies in fringe/extremist groups. Saying that all Muslims have a possible connection to Al Qaeda would be like saying all Christians have a connection to the Ku Klux Klan. The media rarely portrays an accurate description of the "average" muslim, the instead choose to show what they think will interest people: the violence of the extremist groups. The majority of Muslims are not terrorists, and they don't hate us. As for the second part of your question, it is highly unlikely any proclaimed Muslims you know are terrorists, unless they are part of a sleeper cell (in which case they wouldn't be openly proclaiming their religion). Hang out with whoever you want, fuck the government if they ever try to dictate that. I am an atheist, so this whole rant is completely unbiased. I just think that judging a whole religion by the actions of a small group of its people is ridiculous. +2

No. But it would do well to get more than one source. You'll find a disconnect from what they say they believe, and what they actually do.

it is very confusing these days. I recently found one of my old friend is going regularly to a madrassa which might be having some radical thoughts. Sorry, but reality that I am being a bit cautious now.
