I learned that fast-cutting splicing techniques in children's television is a very dangerous thing that can destroy attention spans and discourage children in school and reading progress. Sadly, though well intentioned, I think Sesame Street has done more damage than good to children's education. Reading to a child, 20 or more pages per night, from a complex and long novel with many characters such as "The Hobbit" has the opposite effect.

When my son was growing up, he and I watched it together. He learned how to count and read a bit by 3 years old (with my encouragement). That show and Mr. Roger's Neighborhood were great TV shows for kids. I realize TV should never take the place of traditional learning -- but it sure didn't hurt my kid.
