What is the difference between the articular fossa and teh glenoid fossa?

    In anatomy a fossa is a depression or pit. There are actually *two* glenoid fossas in the skeleton, in both cases where one bone articulates with another. Thus they are both articular fossas.

    (1) In the temporal bone of the skull, where the mandible (jawbone) articulates as a hinge.

    (2) In the shoulder blade (scapula) where the upper arm bone (humerus) articulates as a ball & socket.
