The Bit Rate is the number of pulses (either zeroes or ones) that occur during a specific unit of time which is usually one second.
A bit is a unit 1/8th of a bite, which is 1/1024th of a kilobite, etc. Bitrate is how much data can be played in a unit of time. The higher the bitrate, the larger the file, and the higher the quality of the file your playing is.
