  • Tell your mom the story of my brother in-law's brother. Went to a community college on Long Island, transferred to the city college Baruch. At that point he wasn't into huge tuition payments like he would have been at Columbia, Fordham or NYU. Gets an internship at a bank while at Baruch and to make a long story short, parlays that into a major job where he's making all kinds of money. The company paid for him to get an MBA at Columbia and now the guy has more money than he knows what to do with. Do yourself a big favor and save your money on that undergraduate tuition. See how you do in college and see what the future brings. If anything, save your money for a good graduate school. Chances are that'll take you much further in life.
  • Work harder...Spend less time going out and spend more time studying... Just say to yourself, if others can do it why cant you do it, are they better than you?? Thats how I motivate myself
  • Start having a better out-look on yourself. If you don't have faith in you how can you expect anyone else to. Your Mother obviously see's something worth spending money on you for. So take her up on it. Good Luck. Tell ya what, I am a single mother of three, 40 years old, been out of school for 20 some years, I was a C average student, I went back to school in June of this year, I want to make something of myself, something my kids can be proud of, so If I can do it you can do it.
  • It depends on how long you have to work on it. If you still have a few years before applying you could pull up your GPA and try to improve your SAT scores. They also give a lot of consideration to a thoughtful and well written admissions essay, so start thinking about it now. You wil also need good recommendations from your teachers so think about who you can ask. If you are already in your junior or senior year of high school and you know that you don't meet their admissions requirements, consider applying to a good but less competitive school. FYI - Columbia has a program for highschool students at their Double Discovery Center. It is designed to get students prepared for college. I don't know what your situation is but maybe you would qualify for it. Good luck to you!
