  • Gynecomastia is a condition that is unflatteringly called "man boobs." It happens when men have abnormally large breasts caused by a hormone imbalance or excessive fat. To make matters worse, sometimes it may happen with only one breast or one of the swelling breasts may secrete milk. It tends to be seen more in boys going through puberty and elderly men.

    Treat with Time

For most people, gynecomastic will go away once the hormones come back in balance, usually within 1to 3 years. Sometimes, the imbalance occurs as a side effect of certain drugs, including steroids. In this case, it usually just requires switching to a different drug or stopping the current drug to get rid of the problem.

    Lose Weight

Many men who are thought to have gynecomastia are overweight. This is not gynecomastia, but pseudogynocomastia or false gynecomastia. This occurs when the enlarged breasts are simply made of additional fat. The best way to get rid of this condition is to lose weight through a healthy diet and fat-burning workout.

    Weight Training

Weight training is not advisable if you have false gynecomastia. This is because exercising the chest muscles and spurring development will only make the false gynecomastia look larger because the enlarged chest muscles will push the fat further out.

    Surgery

If diet doesn't help and you don't want to wait a few years for the gynecomastia to go away on its own, there is always surgery. This is a cosmetic procedure where the doctor removes the excess fat from your chest. This will reduce the size of your breasts. Though effective, the procedure can cost around $10,000 as of 2009. You will also be recovering from the surgery for two months. As with all major surgeries, there can be serious risks as well. Discuss your options with your doctor to choose the solution best for your body.
