  • The trucking industry, despite economic slumps, continues to grow. Truck driving can provide excellent income opportunities, especially for those who choose to take on the role of owner/operator. When you become an owner/operator, you can control who you work for, how much you work, and where you go. Read on to learn more about becoming an owner/operator trucker.

    Learning to Drive

If you starting out with no truck driving experience, the first step is to get your CDL (Commercial Drivers License) and truck driving training. There are many driving schools across the country, lasting anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. Before you become an owner/operator, however, you may want to spend some time in the employ of a company, so that you can learn the ropes and gain road experience. This can also help you decide if you want the added responsibility of owner operating.

    Going Out on Your Own

The decision to become an owner/operator is tough. You have to consider the financial and personal ramifications of this type of career. As an owner/operator, you are responsible for your truck, for your loads, and all other aspects of your business, including health and truck insurance. You will have to plan and be able to take enough loads to cover your expenses and still make enough income to support yourself and your family.

    Getting Your Own Truck

You have the option of purchasing your own rig through a transportation company, and working exclusively for that company or you can go it completely alone, and buy your own truck and trailer. For those with less than perfect credit, leasing through a transportation company may be the most viable option. Payment plans, help with fuel and insurance costs, and even health insurance benefits are made available in these situations. If you purchase your own truck, you will be responsible for maintenance, repairs, fuel, insurance and all the other duties required to keep you on the road.
