Pig ears are popular dog treats. Dogs need to chew on bones or similar items to help keep their teeth clean. Pig ears work well for this. They are also useful in providing play and exercise for dogs. Many dogs seem to like the flavor and owners often approve because they are natural.
On the Other: Pig Ears Have Risks
According to veterinarians Dr. Race Foster and Dr. Marty Smith, pig ears come with some risks for dogs. They are high in fat and can contribute to obesity and pancreatitis. If a dog bites off and swallows a piece of the pig ear, it could cause indigestion, gastrointestinal irritation or even choking. Some pig ears produced outside of the United States have been the source of salmonella.
Bottom Line
Pig ears can be valuable as both a dog toy and treat. While there are benefits, there are also health concerns and pig ears can be hazardous to both dogs and humans. Pig ears can be used with caution but there are other, less risky, alternatives available.
