More than 7,500 varieties of tomatoes are grown for various purposes throughout the world. While it is impossible to describe all the different types, they can be sorted into general types.
Slicing Tomatoes
Slicing tomatoes are the most common type seen in supermarkets. Beefsteak tomatoes are the largest type and a popular choice to go on sandwiches or burgers.
Canning Tomatoes
Some tomato varieties, such as oxheart and plum, are often canned and made into paste. They are smaller than slicing tomatoes, have a thinner skin and may also be more dense.
Salad Tomatoes
Salad tomatoes are smaller and sweeter than other varieties. Cherry, campari and grape tomatoes fit into this group.
Early Tomatoes
Early tomatoes are designed to produce fruit even in areas with cool summers.
Heirloom Tomatoes
Heirloom tomatoes come in a wide range of colors and shapes. These have mostly been bred over time by small farmers interested in bringing out different traits. They tend to be more colorful and can be more flavorful than mass-produced tomatoes.
