  • You're in a pinch and out of dishwashing detergent, but it's not okay to use the container of hand soap sitting on your kitchen sink. Using hand soap in a dishwasher sends mounds of suds surging through the appliance and most likely onto your floor. There are several ways to combat the effects of hand soap in a dishwasher and get it running normally once again.

    Nip It in the Bud

If you've just filled the dishwasher's detergent dispenser with hand soap, do not turn the dishwasher on. Take a paper towel and soak up the soap out of the appliance. Use as many paper towels as you need to remove the soap.

    Too Late

If the deed is already done, stop the dishwasher. Open the door and scoop as much water and suds as you can out of the appliance, depositing any sudsy water into the sink. Add a cup of vinegar to the dishwasher, start it and let it run for a few minutes. This will cut down on the lather from the soap. Add another cup of vinegar and let the dishwasher run a full cycle. This should eliminate the soap from the appliance, the pump and the hoses.

    Cleaning Up

If the dishwasher was running when you realized your error, there's likely to be water on your floor. Mop the liquid up if there's a large amount of it, or use paper towels to mop up minor drips.
