There are many causes of slow computer startup speeds. You can attribute most of the problems to poor computer maintenance or the lack thereof. To solve startup speed problems, it is important to understand the major causes.
Registry Problems
The registry is a large database containing the settings and cofigurations used to modify programs. A registry corrupt with left over entries from uninstalled programs, or damaged startup files causes slow computer startups.
Startup Programs
Too many programs automatically launching at computer startup use large amounts of system resources and slow down startup speeds. Programs such as media players and instant messaging programs by default are set to launch automatically at computer startup. They slow down startup speed especially if you have a low memory computer.
Fragmented Disk
When a hard disk is fragmented, files are scattered in multiple locations rather than in one central location. You computer slows down at startup because Windows has to go through multiple sectors rather than one section in order to trace these files. The more fragmented a hard disk is, the slower the startup speed is.
Malicious Programs
Malicious programs such as viruses and Trojans, install into system folders and the registry and damage startup programs which as a result decreases startup speed. Malicious programs hijack system components and consume volumes of RAM diminishing startup and computer performance.
Low Memory
Your computer will startup slowly if the RAM (Random Access Memory) is low. This especially becomes a problem if you constantly download and install too many applications that consume volumes of memory. The higher the number of programs on your computer, the lower memory will be.
Solutions
Uninstall unecessary programs that you do not need or use from the Control Panel. Run frequent virus scans and delete malicious files. Defragment your computer system using the Disk Defragmenter tool. While this will cost you some money, consider upgrading your computer memory.
