3G speed refers to the network speed of a cellular connection. 3G is used by most cellular providers and is primarily used for data transfer.
History
The 3G standard was released in 2001 as the successor to 2G.
Significance
The use of 3G has enabled large data transfers to mobile devices, which allows for streaming video, audio and more.
Features
According to Computer World, 3G offers an average download speed of 614 kilobits per second. (According to Speed Test, the average home connection is 6.97 megabits per second.)
Benefits
3G allows users with supported handhelds to access the Internet where a 3G connection is present. This has created a surge in the smart-phone market and mobile Internet-based devices.
Availability
According to CNET, all national cellular carriers offer 3G networks. Most have different packages available with varying speeds and coverage.
Future
As of October 2009, Sprint is the only carrier that offers a 4G network. 4G will offer gigabit speeds with much better data transfer rates.
