A CDL test is the equivalent of a driver's license test for commercial (or big rig) drivers. It encompasses a written test and a driving-skills test. Both sections of the test must be passed in order to obtain a commercial driver's license (or CDL).
General Knowledge Exam
The first part of obtaining a CDL is passing the General Knowledge written examination. This test covers sections such as air brakes, endorsements and tandem axles. Depending on the reason for obtaining a CDL, an applicant may be required to sit for more than one General Knowledge test.
Driver's Permit
After passing the General Knowledge test, the applicant can obtain a driver's permit and begin learning the driver's skills. This will include pre-trip inspection, vehicle control and basic driving skills.
Driving Test
The driving test must be passed in order to obtain a CDL. There are up to three tests that will need to be passed, depending on the type of truck being driven.
DOT Physical
A CDL applicant must also pass a DOT physical.
School
All of these requirements can be fulfilled by attending an accredited truck driver's school.
