Spyware is a general term for software that invades a computer. Spyware often gathers information in the background, collects personal information or reconfigures settings on a computer.
Advertisements
Some spyware is used to transmit advertising to the user---usually in the form of pop-ups while browsing. These are usually disguised so they appear related to what the user is surfing.
Browser Hijack
Spyware can also be used to change settings in the user's browser such as the the homepage or security.
Data Collection
Some spyware is not as visible but can be more troublesome by collecting information about the user for use in fraud or other potentially harmful activity.
Keylogging
Keylogging spyware is one of the most dangerous as it can be used to collect login and credit card information.
Other Terms
Other forms of spyware include malware and adware. While not necessarily related, they are all malicious and are usually installed without permission.
