  • Yes, diamond can burn, especially at high temperature in an oxygen-rich atmosphere. In 1813 Humphrey Davey used a lens to concentrate the sun's rays as a heat source to ignite diamond, and showed that the product of combustion was CO2, suggesting that diamonds were made of carbon. Diamonds can't get hot enough in a microwave oven to burn.
