I went without electricity throughout 1/2 of my house - a fuse blew and when a new fuse was put in, it also blew. There were a lot of sparks and assuming it to be a fire hazard and an expensive repair, I left it for almost a year (was a poor student at the time). After putting up with extention cords running everywhere and candlelight dining, I finally was in a position to hire an electrician. It cost $100 - I felt like an idiot!
Right now there is no electricity in my house. Its a major problem here in india. We have regular electricity cutoffs.
We were without electricity for 8 days last spring after a bad wind storm. I did go without electric for two months a few years ago. But I had battery powered lights to read by and gas for heating water.
