There are grooves cut into the surface of many good pads that the mechanic looks for. if the groove cannot be found or is only barely there ( in the face of the pad ) then the pad is worn out or nearly so. Some disc pads I have seen have a fairly wide groove radially right down the centre, making it easy to see by looking thru the top of the calipers. If the pad looks like one continuous plate, its time to think about new ones.

Many older style pads had spring metal that would touch the disc when the pad was worn, causing a squealing noise when the pads were worn out.
Take it to a free brake inspection, other than the dealer.
PS check your warranty it might require you to have them changed before 30%.
