No...just seriously emotionally distressed, and in great need for finding the corrective solutions for that which is causing that distress. Doing so is quite possible...but it is not an easy undertaking.

Nope.
With some people, those feelings are situational. Not having the tools to adequately deal with depression doesn't make a person mentally ill. That being said, you're onto something, because most suicidal people to have mental illnesses, whether they've been diagnosed or not. Good question! +5
No, but it does mean they are troubled and perhaps depressed -- not necessarily clinically depressed.
not mentally ill, but in dire need of someone to relate to and get help. Contemplating suicide is a scream for help, not a meaningless noise.
Interesting question. You are aware that Sigmund Freud commited suicide with an assistances of a friend.

You're reading If a person seriously considers suicide, does this automatically make them 'mentally ill'?

No, not I...but this past February I had a dear nephew commit suicide at the age of 28. I know it was needless, but he suffered significant emotional distress since his childhood, beginning at seven years old, when his Mother passed away at the age of 32 from cancer. Ultimately, the deep hole of alchoholism served as the catalyst for his final decision.

I'm so sorry to hear of what your nephew went through Chuck.

Thank you, Jadey. Millions have taken the same route, or have contemplated suicide, I'm sure. He was a good kid, and all of us in the family loved him and showed that love. I think he was most disappointed in himself and could not endure it further. His Dad told me that he had visited his Mother's grave but a few days before he took his life. It is obvious that her loss...that pain...never left him. Most of us still can't bear to watch the film "Beaches" or listen to Bette Midler sing "Wind Beneath My Wings" without grieving her early demise. Thank you both again.

That's such a tragedy. I have been there myself. I attempted suicide, by all accounts it was a miracle I survived. The loss of a family member can take such an emotional toll, as we all know, and some people simply never recover from that grief. For me, it was the loss of my grandmother which led me down that road. I feel for your family.
