In the UK the letter boxes are lidded slots on people's front doors and the mail isn't regarded as delivered unless its been 'posted' through that slot and is inside the building. It seems odd to me that in the US the mail only has to be delivered to 'the property' meaning as far as the boundary, couldn't anyone help themselves to your regular mail?

I do not mean in a general delivery, like everyday mail runs. I mean a mailman leaves his post office location and comes directly to your front door.
