  • If you put it another way; '1000 die in eathrquake in san franciso' is this not a national emergency? Just because the emergency has been over a period of time doesnt detract from its seriousness. Also the term 'national emergency' is impetus for people to be more cautious and help slow down the spreading of swine flu. So yeh, it should.

  • At first I did not think so but in the past three weeks two relatives, niece and grand daughter, and a friend of my other grand daughter, have been told by their doctors that they have the swine flu. I was told that the doctors do not give the test because it is very expensive. They actually assume they have it but it is better to err on the side of caution. They all had high fevers (grand daughters was 104 this morning) and felt like they were sick to their stomach, and listless. Just the medicine that the doctor gave to my grand daughter was $93.00. Now I believe it was correct to say it is a national emergency. I hate to say this, but I think there will be many more deaths by the time it is all over. Our grand children visit us quite often, now I hope my wife or I will not get it. She is going to buy the protective masks when she goes out tomorrow.
  • No. Overreaction. +5
  • Yeah, everyone thinks because they declared a national emergency it means doom and gloom. It's a technicality issue! It gives health care providers the option to give treatment or vaccination off site, they can give it to people anywhere they want and still get paid. Don't pay so much attention to the news media people, investigate things and educate yourselves. The news is there to make money, scaring people makes money. +4
  • Why - a thousand dead people aren't enough for you? Americans went holy ape shit crazy when 2,752 people died when the Saudi's and Egyptians knocked down the twin towers...but 1,000 dead Americans from the flu isn't enough to cause anyone to care about eh? Only 1,000 people dead......just a measly thousand....yeah - your right - it's an over reaction. We Americans have no seance of proportion on these things.
  • No. The regular annual flu causes around half a million deaths worldwide, approximately 30,000 of which are in the US. So far it's been 1000 people in the US, and just over 6000 worldwide. Things were different in the 1918 epidemic - maybe it was a different strain or something, but the current swine flu does not appear to be quite as nasty.
