  • Spanking of children within families is illegal in some countries (for example, Sweden, Switzerland, Iceland, Finland, Denmark, Norway, Austria, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Malta, Cyprus, Croatia, Israel, Latvia,Estonia, and as of January 2007, Greece). New Zealand is currently debating whether or not to outlaw parental spanking, having outlawed corporal punishment within its educational institutions in 1989. (latest news: New Zealand Smacking Law Survives Vote 2007) Canada permitted it as of 2004 I know that there have been moves to pass laws in Australia against spanking but I do not think they have yet been passed. However, corporal punishment in schools is outlawed.
