Serotonin's primary duty is to constrict vascular pathways, and is also a neurotransmitter. The protein is tryptamine, which can be found in health food stores. But your body has no shortage of the necessary elements to produce serotonin; it is naturally found in great quantities in your stomach acid. Medications such as Prozac and Zoloft are serotonin uptake inhibitors, which prevent the serotonin from being reabsorbed into the transmitter (axon) too quickly. I have heard that St. John's Wart also has properties that simulate these prescribed medications. My opinion: One way to "boost" serotonin levels is to make sure you routinely get a good night's sleep, and get up and active immediately when you awaken at the proper time. This will get your body out of a "high/low" routine, and stabilize chemical production and distribution of neurotransmitters. Other ways are to stabilize your eating habits and weight, routinely exercise, and read a book (emphasizing focus).

salmon, walnuts, and ground flax seeds because of omega-3 fatty acids help mild depression but I've found they only take the edge off more severe depression.
