    I think it's fair.

They didn't revoke it "just" because they were messing with a laptop. They revoked it because:

Laptops in the cockpit are against the rules.
Because they were so distracted that they overflew the airport by 100 miles.
Because they "ignored" the radio transmissions trying to warn them.
Because they didn't realize their error until a flight attendant interrupted and questioned them.

Yes, it's harsh to lose your career over something so "minor".

But it was only dumb luck and other people's efforts that kept it a "minor" issue.

Would you want to be 35,000 feet in the air and your pilot be on a laptop instead of doing his job. I think he's lucky that is all he get.

Pilots are paid extremely well because their job description includes responsibility for the lives of everyone on board. You bet I think those guys should get the boot.

Yes. He wasn't paying attention to the controls. Over 100 people were relying on his skills to transfer them safely to their destination.

HELL YEAH! Revoke it and throw his dumb ass out of the industry. You would be blown away if you knew half the things pilots do above our heads! The owner of a private charter company where I used to work drinks when he flies all over the world. He has stumbled off the plane so many times after rough landings. But he some how gets away it among other things because he's a millionaire and on the board of regents at a major college.

I do think it's required that a pilot should be paying attention to what he's doing, although it depends on what you call 'playing' and the type of plane.. If he's looking at the laptop momentarily every now and then, in a small private plane, and in an area with a low traffic air space then sure. If it's a commercial jet full of passengers in a busy area, certainly not.
