1) There is no need to apologize. I recognize your culture's desire to express humility, but us Americans are not so easily offended. Our relatively barbaric, uncultured ways have made us 'thick-skinned' and thus resistant/immune to insults. 2) When life hurts me, I can take it without breaking stride, but when I see my wife crying, the best friend I have in the world and the person who I care about above all others, it breaks my heart and makes me feel powerless and worthless. I took a vow to protect her and yet something has hurt her, so therefore I must be worthless. I could not abide by my word. I could not live by the oath I swore when I put that ring on her finger. While I do not have any friends other than my wife who I feel so strongly about, I imagine that the feeling is similar, and it is something that probably transcends cultural boundaries.
