NASCAR points system is designed to reward consistency, not the most victories. Kenseth had only one first place finish in 2003, but almost always finished in the top ten, and in half the races he was in the top five. He also never suffered from car failure. This consistent effort not only placed him first in Championship points, but he clinced the title two races before the season ended. By contrast, Ryan Newman had more victories than anyone else ( 8 ), but also had more wrecks than anyone else. His large record of Did Not Finish races placed him sixth in points.
