Is it illegal to eat dogs and cats? If so.. why is it not illegal to eat your own chicken or pigs?

Yes, in some jurisdictions it is illegal to eat animals considered to be pets (according to Wikipaedia). I did not do legal research on the topic.

If they are strays without a home, I think you can eat them. If it's someone's pet then it would be forbidden. Of course, morally it is a bit shaky.

Probably because they are classified as domestic, and I don't think people who work in pet shops would appreciate it if someone bought a kitty with the intent to eat it.

Ironic. so many folks detest the eating of cats and dogs, but they've got no problem dropping them off at "humane" societies.
