On my more pessimistic days, I think the answer is "money". The idealist in me wants to say "love" or "peace", though.

Usually sludge in the bottom of the pot...keep going and it becomes stickly sludge that smells awful....a bit more and it's burnt on crap and billows of smoke and a ruined pot....

Well it's sort of a whimsical question... and I considered some whimsical answers, but it wasn't to be. It doesn't "boil down": reality is very complex, and it can't be reduced to some simple principle or basic element. At the same time, all this complexity is really one "thing": reality itself. It's not a bunch of separate things glued together, it's one thing which we chop into separate things with our minds. One REALLY complex thing: all the "parts" are interrelated and inter-dependent. Attempts to boil it all down to a single, simpler form are doomed.

Happiness. Studies have shown that there are higher suicide rates amongst the rich than the poor. Those with low social integration have always tested highest for misery and suicide. In the end it doesnt matter who you're with, what job you have, how much money you earn or where you live - as long as your're happy none of it matters and you'll never want more.
