The very minute I heard the first news report.

When I heard it was a hoax. Honestly, I wasn't following it closely enough to suspect or even care about anything related to that.

When they found there was no kid in the balloon.

When I saw the balloon. It wasn't nearly big enough to carry a child.

When the balloon was in the air. I thought it may be a practical joke done by the kids that had gone wrong (i.e. made it on to TV and had all the emergency services involved). The first time I really suspected it was a hoax done by the family was when I saw the look on the Dad's face when the boy made that comment.
