What causes the most breathing problems and cancer. Cigarette smoking or town vehicle exhaust fumes?

How do you know this for sure? The government won't admit to the dangers of town exhaust fumes because they would have to stop/restrict folks driving their cars. Not good for votes.

As an ex policer Officer I wonder? After directing London traffic and blowing my nose it was black with soot and my breathing was hard and laboured Never had this with problem with moderate smoking. Have run two marathons and am fit as a fiddle.

Well, vehicle exhaust is definitely a public health concern, along with other air pollution, second-hand smoke, etc etc. Always good to have luck on your side. I grew up with a father who smoked 2-3 packs/day -- I'd sit on his lap watching tv while he smoked -- but never had any second-hand smoke effects that I know of. Cigarettes, however, contain nicotine which is definitely correlated with cardiovascular disease including heart attack and stroke. Not to mention all the carcinogens known to be present in cigarette smoke (producing lung cancer, bladder cancer, etc). I believe every word you say but individual testimonials prove nothing about safety -- that's why it took decades of statistical analysis to establish all the harmful effects.
