  • That was of course a publicity stunt. The Maldives are 4'11'' above sea level, the lowest country on the planet. So they do have some concern, but as to their country going under? Not likely. While the "global warming" debate is still being discussed, the amount of warming is not enough to submerge the Maldives anytime soon (within a generation). Of the 1,192 islets, only two hundred are inhabited. With a 2009 estimated population of 309,000, they could be easily evacuated if necessary long before being submerged. Like a dormant volcano or floodplain, just cause it's dry land now don't mean it's a good idea to live there.
