  • When my son, 30 today, was a little boy, we used to subscribe to this children's comicbook called Tinkle. There was a regular short comic strip series about an old wise and rich man known fondly as Chachaji (Respected Uncle). In one of the stories, a boy approaches the old man, and here's the conversation as I remember it. Boy: Chachaji, I want to grow up and be rich like you. Can you please tell me how you grew to be so rich? Chachaji: Of course, dear son. But to tell you that story, I don't need that light on. Would you please switch it off first? Boy: Chachaji, I've understood.
  • These are several things I've done over the years, and I was able to buy a car, and still put money into my savings. 1. Pack your lunch for work everyday. I cook a few nights each week and sometimes I take leftover for lunch. 2. Use your cruise control (if you have it) even when you're driving on the main roads. Continuous accelerating is what burns more gas. 3. Go to www.gasbuddy.com and type in your city to find the cheapest gas station in your city. 4. Take advantage of nature by opening your curtains to let in heat from the outside. 5. Buy bulk when you buy toiletries, soaps, deodorants, etc. You're going to use these items often so stock up.(especially when its on sale) 6. Cut coupons weekly and use them everytime you shop. 7. Keep the lights off in any rooms you're not using. 8. Wash dishes by hand and leave the dishwasher off. 9. Get a set amount of money from the ATM to last you until payday. People spend more when they constantly go for $20.00 each time. 10. Close air vents in rooms you're not using. Or, you can use a space heater if you're in one room most of the time. 11. Replace all your lightbulbs with flourescent bulbs. They cost a little more, but, they last much longer, and they burn less energy. 12. Most cities have a Dollar General or bargain store that sells the same products as Walmart and the like. Shop at these stores and you'll pay even less for brand names. Lastly, check your tire pressure once a month to make sure you're not running low. As a woman, I take advantage of any tips I receive from men to make my life easier.
  • Another thing. Most people don't look closely at their car insurance policy, especially when they own more than one car. If you have two cars and you drive only one of them to work, list the other car as "pleasure" and this will lower your rates. Also, calculate the EXACT miles you drive to work in the other vehicle and have your agent recalculate it. This can either reduce your premium or increase it. Once your car is paid for notify your agent and you can adjust your policy premium again. Lastly, unplug unused appliances, because they are still in use even when they're not turned on.
