Rabbits are the herbivires and are the next step down the food chain for nearly any omnivore or carnivore indigenous to their area. Domestic dogs and cats, foxes, coyotes, bobcats, hawks, eagles, snakes, and anything else that can catch them, will. Somehow it worked out that few native predators had the skill or inclination to catch them when they were introduced to Australia, save for the dingoes. The rest is history.
