Good grief...did you just get this dog, or have you been allowing this behavior for the past 8 years? How about some TRAINING HERE! Training with Positive Reinforcement not only will teach this silly coot some good manners, but also give her some APPROPRIATE THINGS to think about. She is clearly an active mind and body, just waiting for something to do...and just as clearly, if YOU do not come up with some acceptable activities...then SHE is perfectly willing to come up with her OWN ideas, none of which are even remotely acceptable! Unfortunately, if you have allowed this behavior for her entire life, then it has become a HABIT that will take a good amount of work and dedication on your parts to help her learn NOT TO DO THIS. The first step is to resolve your entire family NOT TO LEAVE ANYTHING out where she can get to it...NOTHING. All food gets put away, dirty clothes go into a hamper that is kept where she can't get to it, Tums and other medications are behind cabinet doors, eye glasses, coins, jewelry ALL PUT WHERE SHE CAN NOT REACH THEM. Then you start on Obedience training DAILY. Plan about half an hour each day for training and another 20 to 30 minutes for simply active play, running, brisk walking...something to poop out her body...chasing a ball...anything to get her moving. Use PRIME TREATS for your training. I like Human grade plain beef jerky, because it requires no refrigeration, and I can cut it into very small bits..small bite/HUGE FLAVOR. She needs to become quick to respond to your commands and so you want to give her a HIGH VALUE reward. Work on all of the basics: COME, SIT, LAY DOWN, STAY (you can place her on a stay for no more than about 3 minutes, since after 3 minutes a dog sort of forgets WHY they are being asked to stay there), BACK UP, COME UP, GET DOWN, GET OFF, GO TO...your bed, the door, your crate....and also FIND IT. "IT" can be a toy, a treat THAT YOU DO NOT PUT ANYWHERE SHE WOULD NEED TO STAND ON HER HIND LEGS TO REACH...keep "IT" in a low spot hiding place! She can advance to finding FAMILY MEMBERS! You may want to consider something active outside of the home. Search and Rescue work..you find a local group, you volunteer (that's what my dog does) they help you train your dog to find lost people! Agility, Flyball, Therapy Dog (for this you have her certified, after you finish teaching her obedience, in Canine Good Citizenship test and Temperament Tested). In the past I worked Therapy Dogs. This is VERY rewarding work to volunteer with...you visit different places according to what you are willing to do. Children's Receiving, Elder Care Homes, Cancer Care, sometimes Critical Coronary Care and Hospice. If YOU can't cope with the Hospice (those people are dying and they will die...but your dog can do SO MUCH GOOD for them while they are alive!!!!), then you don't do that...I used to bawl in the car sometimes afterward, but it was ok, and I coped...my dog helped me too! The bottom line is that you HAVE GOT to end this with Positive training and an activity for her to do that is safe, productive (she is obviously a SMART DOG!), AND FUN for her and for you! You may want to reconsider what you normally feed her. Kibble is not only NOT A SPECIES APPROPRIATE FOOD, it also provides NO emotional gratification for a dog or cat in eating it! Dogs and Cats are MEAT EATERS! They are designed to eat and digest RAW MEAT 80%, Bones 10% and Organs 10%. RAW BONES including chicken (the softest of all bones) are SAFE. COOKED BONES of ANY TYPE are dangerous, because heat/cooking MAKES THEM BRITTLE and brittle bones become sharp shards WHEN MASHED by a dog's strong jaws! http://www.skylarzack.com/rawfeeding.htm http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/rawfeeding/ http://www.rawfeddogs.net/Recipes Here are two dogs playing fly ball...and my own dog, Hannah tracking a hider last weekend, across a stream. (we don't always work in the woods, most tracking is in residential neighborhoods...) Raw fed and loving THIS FREE deer neck from Freecycle! (Saves lots of money) Although Border Collies excel at Fly ball and usually Agility too...ANY DOG that is physically fit and active can learn to do and be successful at doing both of these action packed games!

Does your dog do this when you are there, or only when you leave the house? If this only happens when she is alone, it could be separation anxiety. In addition to the training that RedHawk suggested, I would add giving her lots of exercise every day, especially before you leave the house (three 30 minute intervals a day is a good place to start). I would also find some appropriate chew toys for her to play with.

A dog eating grapes, raisins and onions= death.....I am serious....dogs should never be allowed to eat grapes!

I think you need to take her to the doctor, it sounds like there's something wrong with her intestines. Maybe she has a dysfunction in her brain of some sort or maybe, she's not getting all the nutrition she needs and is looking for it in the wrong places. I'm not trying to put you down as an owner, it's just that sometimes people think they are taking good care of their pets, but something is lacking.

Does it have cloven hooves, little horns and yellow eyes with slits? That is a goat.

Keep the food in a cupboard that the dog can't open on it's own. Close the underwear drawer (dogs don't generally open drawers on their own). How hard can it be? It is a dog. If you don't want your hound to eat the cake, then put the cake away and stick the Tums in the medicine cabinet.

I think She's missing something from her diet....better take her to a doctor

Luna goes for a walk twice per day, for at least 1 hour each time--usually for an hour and a half. She does this when we aren't there (or at night when we're sleeping). She's a rescue dog, but she's lived with us for 6 years. Her behavior got worse when our son left for college. During the day when we're at work, she's with our housekeeper (and she LOVES the housekeeper). She's well trained when we're there--she does whatever we want. It's just when we're gone. I hate to have to crate her when we're gone. She seems a bit old to get used to the crate, and she barks continuously when she's left outside. I just don't know what else to do with her. She's getting worse.

Put the canine outside

Deliberately leave something out with Cayenne pepper on it. Do it as many times as necessary. She will always think it is too hot to eat. That is how I broke my dog of getting into the garbage.
