It would NOT be a good idea, for the following reasons: A woman can better defend herself, if she has "the element of surprise" on her side. If potential attackers KNOW that she has had some sort of self-defense training (and training that potential attackers have ALSO had), she loses that edge, and that can mean the difference, in some cases, between living and dying. When I used to give free Tae Kwon Do lessons to girls who I knew personally, I would always admonish them with, "Tell no one of your abilities, so you will always have the advantage over them, in a combat situation." One of them followed my advice, and when a dude she was dating attempted to rape her, she put him in the Emergency Room at the local hospital. (He lost the sight in his right eye, as a result. He had no idea that her hands and feet were deadly weapons.) Self-defense lessons should ALWAYS be both private and confidential, for the ladies. +5

I don't think so. The problem with self-defense courses and martial arts courses is that, unless you really involve yourself in them and study it hard, dedicating yourself to years of practice, they will do more harm than good. A rudimentary knowledge of self-defense is dangerous, giving a person a false sense of security..."Hey, I can defend myself, I took a course!"...they think. But real life is not that simple. And a lot of the moves they teach in self-defense courses are silly and impractical---they are more likely to make the attacker mad and more dangerous if you don't do them right or don't aim right.
