No, DVI-D doesn't carry sound at all.
Did you plug the audio cable in? That should be all that's needed.
You may need to use the menu option on the monitor to select the correct sound source. Also double check that you have plugged the audio cable into the right connector on the PC, and that you have the audio not muted, and the sound turned up on the PC as well as the monitor.

You're reading I just purchased a BENQ 22" LCD monitor today and i have no sound! I have all plugins installed except for a DVI D cable which i did not receive, is this needed for sound?
