EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT THIS QUESTION: LDS DENOMINATIIONS There have been close to 200 LDS Denominations throughout history, 67 of them are currently active. http://www.religionfacts.com/mormonism/denominations.htm http://www.religioustolerance.org/lds.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Latter_Day_Saint_denominations THE BOOK OF MORMON According to WikiPedia there are: 10 different historical print versions of the Book of Mormon in English 7 different on-line editions of the Book of Mormon in English http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_Mormon#Historic 83 different translations of the Book of Mormon from English into other languages. (And since Mormons seem to count EVERY translation in EVERY language in their "you guys have so many versions" critiques so will I) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_Mormon#Non-English_translations Finally, in September of this year (2009) Yale released a new version of the Book of Mormon that was compiled by Yale University Press that was the end result of Mormon manuscript expert Royal Skousen's compilation of the text from the Original Manuscripts (O and P for you Mormon Studies Scholars out there). Mr. Skousen found 250 text variants that change the text's meaning from what has been published since 1830. I don't need to - there's already enough OTHER evidence of multiple versions of The Book of Mormon. DOCTRINE & COVENANTS Well to begin with, the Doctrine & Covenants was originally a rewriting of the "Book of Commandments" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_Mormon#Non-English_translations And the differences between the two were so pronounced that even years later it was a problem for those who were Mormon Leaders at the time - like David Whittmer in "An Address To All Believers in Christ" http://www.ils.unc.edu/~unsworth/mormon/bookofcommandments.html Now let's consider the following from the comparisons chart on WikiPedia: (http://www.ils.unc.edu/~unsworth/mormon/bookofcommandments.html) I count: 5 different versions of D&C: 1) LDS Edition 2) RLDS/CoC Edition 3) Book of Commandments 4) Kirtland Edition (1835) 5) Nauvoo Edition (1844) In addition, most have had additions additions and retractions. For example, the current LDS addition has been through at least 4 and as many as 6 revisions. THE PEARL OF GREAT PRICE According to WikiPedia there have only been two editions of the Pearl of Great Price (1851 and 1907). However, given the fact that the only those LDS Denominations that splintered after the Nauvoo period of Mormon History this is hardly surprising. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pearl_of_Great_Price_%28Latter_Day_Saints%29#1851_edition THE BIBLE There are in fact THREE different versions of the Bible recognized and used by Latter-day Saints: The 1611 King James Version (KJV), the Joseph Smith Translation (JST) [or "Inspired Version" as it's known by the RLDS/CoC] and the OFFICIAL LdS Church version which includes the full text of the KJV as well as selected excerpts from the JST. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Book_of_Mormon_and_the_King_James_Bible http://eom.byu.edu/index.php/Bible Ironically, by modern standards the KJV is a sub-par translation* as it is not based on the best manuscripts - such as the Dead Sea Scrolls and Codex Sinaiticus (http://www.leaderu.com/orgs/probe/docs/kjvdebat.html). SUMMARY: So clearly using the same criteria that Mormons use to snipe at the integrity of the Bible (see this question - which this question was posted in response to http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/1743018) as well as Christian Denominations, Latter Day Saints are clearly throwing stones at their own glass house. Their claims of Church and Scriptural integrity, unity and continuity are just as valid and just as flawed as the "apostate" Churches that they criticize. * In fact, those portions of established LdS Theology based on the KJV Bible are discredited by these newer, more precise translations of the Bible. The best example of this is how the Holy Spirit is known (and only referred) to as "The Holy Ghost" in LdS Theology to support their belief that The Holy Spirit is a spirit child of God the Father who lacks a body like they do. That is, he's a "Ghost" not a Man with a body like God the Father and Jesus Christ. This, of course, supports the LdS "Exalted Man" Theology of God (see the quasi-canonical 1844 King Follett discourse http://mldb.byu.edu/follett.htm) while correctly translating the word "Spirit" does not and might lead one to believe (as Joseph Smith did prior to approximately 1838) that God is, "a personage of spirit" rather than an exalted man. “Holy, holy God; we believe that thou art God...that thou art a spirit, and that thou wilt be a spirit forever.” —Alma 31:15, Book of Mormon “...The Father being a personage of spirit, glory and power: possessing all perfection and fulness…” — Doctrine and Covenants, 1935 edition, Lectures Fifth of Faith, Section V, p. 52-53
