Stress is defined as force per unit area. When an aircraft flies,it's wings are both subjected to horizontal and vertical strsses. The horizontal forces acting on it are due to the wind pressure or the drag. The vertical pressure on the other hand are atmospheric pressure and the forces of gravity due to it's own weight. So the atmospheric pressure and the weight of the place oppose the lift of the plane giving rise to the vertical stress and the drag due to air friction give rise to the horizontal stress.
