There is no proposal to impose a VAT tax under discussion in the USA today.
While none of us like shelling out our money in taxes, and we all would love to see them lower or nonexistent, we need to be adult about it and realize we like many of the things that taxes pay for. If we refuse to pay for them, they won't be available.
The USA currently has the lowest individual tax rate of any developed nation on earth. Because we want all our goodies, but want low taxes too boot, we have run up $11 trillion dollars in debt. So either we need to settle for a lot less from government or actually raise revenues to retire the debt.
Yet another way to squeeze money out of us...it will most especially effect those of us that don't have a lot of money to give since it will raise the prices on pretty much everything. Sigh
VAT is the same as sales tax, right? Here it's 25% flat on all services and goods. I don't see a problem with it, we haven't had a bloody rebellion yet
A tax increase for all Americans who buys things, including the very poor who has trouble affording necessities already. They'll have even less change, less change they could believe in, as well. Illinois tried to do this when The Great One was a Senator, but the public rallied against, and it never came through. Round two, and this time He knows where mistakes were made. The Great One should just pass a 100% income tax, and distribute back to us in the manner He thinks is best. It's what He wants, and dammit, He'll try his best to get it. Yes he can.
If VAT taxes would replace the current income tax system, then I would be all for it. That way everyone would be paying their fair share. Tourists, citizens, undocumented citizens, and criminals, all purchase products and would pay the Value Added Tax. It makes too much sense to ever happen here in the U.S.
Honestly, i paid VAT on things i bought when i was in the UK - and i was okay with it. I like people adding VAT to things you buy because it makes the prices easier to know and VAT helps pay for socialized medicine.
I never see VAT or socialized medicine being in America in your lifetime, Phillis.
Yep. My first impulse was correct. Trust the democrats to take a good basic idea and screw it up.
Its coming folks, and about all it will do is cripple the middle class. Upper class, can hide their money, lower class wants to goverment money so middle class will only go down from here. Im not against any reasonable taxation for programs but I am 100% against taxation as a fix for avoiding spending the time to fix broken programs, creating slush funds for special interest groups and wasteful spending.
A nice analagy is, there are 100 children lined up outside a Candy Store. Your child in 1st in line. He is allowed to spend one dollar. He will think about it and make his choices. Now send him in where he is allowed to take what he wants. Watch him loot the store before anyone gets there chance. That's our government at work.
If we continue down this path you can say good-bye to the Middle Class American.

You're reading What do you think of VAT taxes? And what are these new services going to cost us in the long run? There's a fox in the henhouse and I can't do a damn thing about it.

I'd like to consider myself at least partly adult about it. I cut up my credit cards 11 years ago. I buy nothing, not even professional lawn equipment, if I can't pay cash for it. And yeah - it sucks! The truth is, there ARE talks going on about this. They just aren't "official", yet. VAT, along with the cap and trade sending my utility bills, et. al, through the roof has me in a panic attack. We simply cannot afford to pay for it, period. +6

Some Republicans have been kicking the idea around as an alternative to the income tax. It's tempting, as who on earth likes the paperwork required to file taxes? But if its the only personal tax used to fund government, then it is extremely regressive. I certainly hope they aren't able to sugar coat it as a "fair" tax instead of the massive transfer of wealth to the richest Americans, and away from the rest of us, which is what it would really be.

Thank you for your input, Jim. I appreciate the effort, as always :)
