Not really. Blanket statements have a certain appeal, but the elimination of cash would be unrealistic. Especially because so many hardships would result from its elimination. How would we have a standard for trade?

If it were ever officially eliminated, there would be an underground of "criminals" who would use and trade in it. So, in effect, the elimination of "the root of all evil" would compound the problem by creating yet another criminal element that trades in currency and precious metals.

Also, I think the phrase you're quoting is more along the lines of: "The LOVE of money is the root of all evil".

Who ruled before everyone had money through specializing their labor in a society? The biggest man with the biggest club.

Work = money. Money = reward for work. Work earns you a better life in a free society than laying down and waiting for food to fall in your mouth.

Nope. Money is not the root of all evil. It is a convenient way to exchange something of value for another something of value. That's it. A tool. Might as well say the Hammer is the Root of All Bad Carpentry.

"Love of money" is traditionally called the root of all evil - ie: greed. The desire to accumulate for yourself no matter what the cost to others.

That greed existed long before the concept of money existed. It will hang around long after money has given way to something more convenient again...

First, you are using a misquote from the Bible as your premise. The idea that "the love of money is the root of all evil" is found in the OT book of Isaiah, plus the NT books of 1 and 2 Thessalonians, and 1 Timothy.

Second, the biblical writers are talking about the lengths people will go to in order to get money. Paul to Timothy is really specific about the kinds of things people will do especially, "[men] who think that godliness is a means to financial gain." 1 Tim 6:5

Third, in today's global economy, it just isn't realistic to attempt a barter society. People in urban centers don't have access to enough raw materials for sustainable trade. There would be anarchy and killing if there wasn't a universally acceptable symbol to trade goods and services; money is that symbol.

Finally, while I understand your disgust with the behaviors that result from the hoarding mentality in the monetary system, you must consider that the hoarding behavior would continue even if you removed money. It truly isn't the money, it's the behavior. Paul continues telling Timothy that he should flee from the lust of money and should seek contentment, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness in all his transactions and interactions.

I hate money; only because I hate people bieng rich or poor. I think in a utopian society that every hundred years all money would be evenly redistributed among everyone, eliminating the rich/poor aspect. I think every job should pay the same wage and therefore people could do what they had a passion for rather than what paid enough to live on. I also believe that basic human needs (food, water, shelter, power, medical care, transport, clothing) should be covered whether you work or not and you should work for luxuries (alcohol, adornments, fancier clothing, personal transport, fancier housing, spa treatments, decorations, movies, cable, etc.).

    However, this will never happen.

Yes, money=evil. However, evil runs the world and there will always be an abundance of greedy, evil people and thier evil money running the world.

If we got rid of cash and traded with cabbages then cabbages would be the root of all evil. And money would be vindicated

No. However, it is worth considering that in today's world, money=power and power corrupts. By that logic one could suggest that money corrupts ('the root of all evil' is going a little far in this case).
