  • I wouldn't complain and would probably do so myself. It's OK to cover your costs. After all, some people make a living out of it; they're called 'Events Organisers' :-)
  • I'd have no problem with such. Perhaps "donations to help offset expenses" would be more indicative. And if it's an overage, keep an account to let everyone else know about it, so that you can pay for an extravagance for a future party. It's kinda what we do at work.
  • If you can afford it, just pay for the expenses. After all, it's at your house; you're the host; you get the thanks and positive strokes from the guests. Entertaining is a pleasure; pleasures aren't always free. Guests are providing all the food. Paper dishes and utensils are cheap in bulk. I'm assuming you're buying the drinks? This is something you could ask some of the guests to bring, rather than food - there's always too much food anyhow. Some could bring sodas and mixers, some could bring wine, some could bring beer. What other expenses do you have? Are you renting tables and chairs? If you truly can't afford it, then (1) okay, put out a donation bowl; but (2) maybe somebody else should host it.
  • You do the inviting.. you do they paying. You don't wanna pay, don't invite. Let someone else do it next time.. Your presence isn't THAT important that NOBODY else will live without it now is it?
