Me and my partner have both been struggeling with heroin addiction for 10years.despratly trying to quite but always ended up using again. We have both been on methadone now for about a year and although its not the ideal as we are both addicted to it now it has enabled us to form normal lifes away from illegal drugs and everything that goes with illegal drug use.now we are both much healthier, can focus on and keep jobs and live normal lifes nobody would ever know we were on anything now and even if we want to use as the mental addiction can not be treated its something that time and will will deal with. the methadone blocks our oppiate recepters in the brain so that helps knowing if we do use it wont work anyway.so yes methadone has really helped us to help ourselfs. Hope that answers your question. Take it easy x

I know a number of people that successfully used methadone to quit opioid addictions. They now live drug free lives :) (On the other hand I know people who just use methadone as a substitute and have no desire to get off of it) I believe the difference is what a person wants out of the methadone - do they want it to be a long time substitute, or do they want it to halp them get off of other drugs....

I know someone who has/is benefiting from the use of methadone for pain, but not drug treatment. I do know that the statistics are in favor of methadone, and that it does/has worked well for many people. One downside that some people experience is addiction to the methadone itself (when attempting to detox from another drug) but this is usually in some way related to the user abusing the methadone, or the doctor not following the dosing schedule as closely as should be. This can be avoided with proper attention.
