  • Here's a shot of a P-51 Mustang. The numbers on the aircraft fall in two groups. On the tail is printed the manufacturer's ID number (414450 in this case)for that particular airframe. This makes it easy to track how many aircraft are in service, which are scheduled for maitenance, and how old the airframe is. The second set noramlly appears on the fuselage sides (S B6 here) and these numbers indicate which sqaudron and flight the aircraft is assigned to. There is enormous variation in these markins and a single airframe may sport many different squadron ID numbers over its service life, unlike the manufacturer's ID which will never change.
