* Mortgage payments. Over 20 or 30 years! It shouldn't take that long. You pay so much interest that you actually paying the sale price at least about 4 times over. * When you want to move it might take some time to sell. It's still the thing to do though.

1-paying off the mortgage, 2-Maintaining the investment. #2 most people never think about. It should really be worked into the determination as to whether you can afford the mortgage you apply for, but almost no one does, and it bites you in the *ss real hard down the road.

1. You fix one thing, then another thing has to be fixed. It never stops. But my house is not a new house. 2. Taxes go up every year, so you have to work on your budget to be able to pay them.
-
Mowing the lawn. Endless and ever increasing property tax. I got really sick of paying property taxes year after year. I rent now.
-
I might go over the alloted 2. 1. Mortage on a house is much higher than rent on a small apt. 2. Taxes and upkeep add to #1. There is yet another consideration and that is the value of your time. If you spend 8 hrs a week working a house compared to 1.5 hrs a week on minor cleanup of a small apt then you lose 6.5 hrs a week to the house. Basically housing is oversold as an investment and is NOT guaranteed to appreciate. If one needs a house, such as for a family, then get one. Otherwise, if you are disciplined, save money and keep your overhead low on a rental. The next issue is that most people are not disciplined in saving, so the only way they build wealth is in home equity, with its requisite costs in interest, time, and upkeep.
