While it is certainly possible to get through an entire career with any "homework", it is definitely not a recommended course. Like many other careers, you get out of it what you put in. A sailor that isn't putting in a little "after hours" work is less likely to rise as fast through the ranks. Hope this helps.

When I was in boot camp in l963, we definitely had "homework" - learning the General Orders by heart ("What's your fourth General Order, sailor??!!!), studying ther Bluejacket's Mandual - in addition to attending all sorts of classes, preparing for personnel and barracks inspections, and making certain everything in your locker was folded, stacked, and kin perfect order (or your CC would likely dump it all on the "deck." Saturdays and Sundays we were pretty well off, but ..... !
