Yeah! especially when they can just hook onto the bumper for free!

But seriously. Giving the Handicapped favors is a socialist thing to do. Why should able-bodied people make up for the cost of bus fare someone who's already soaking our medical system dry?
You don't want to be SOCIALISTS, do you?
</sarcasm>
The real reason why... Because we have sympathy for those who are handicapped in some way, and want to share the world we live with with them. Also, it's the Christian thing to do.
Well, maybe everyone getting off the bus to lift the chir bound person into the bus when the lift breaks would be a more Chritian thing to do.
I don't know for sure, because where I live they have to pay a full fare, but it's probably for the same rationale that a person from a disadvantaged group might be considered for a job before an equally-qualified straight, non-disabled, white, male. Since society is generally set up for mobile people, there's a lot that people with mobility disabilities can't do which the rest of us can do, so we maybe can try to even the scales by giving them a break on the things they can do, like letting them take the bus for cheap.
Your compassion only exceeds your intelligence.
for those "up in arms" over this question, may i point out the handicapped propaganda saying they want to be treated the same as anyone else, that they are handi-capable
and the fact that wheelchair bound persons can work many jobs just as well as anyone else.
also i see many times when the wheelchair rider was not in fact handicapped at all and will stand up after leaving the bus to push their wheelchair down the street.
not saying every wheelchair rider is faking but there are some who are.
That question sure sounds of a total lack of sensitivity toward those with a disability.
How would you like it if you had to use crutches and some asshole parked in a disability spot near the door?
While I do empathise with your points, & they are both true & funny, I suspect you wont get alot of sympathy for this one :)
(Love the 'they take up 3 or 5 seats' nearly fell off me chair laughing)
Because they are handicapped.

I know it sounds harsh but why should wheelchair passengers only pay 1/2 price on public transit buses? they take up 3 or 5 seats depending on seating design, require much longer to get on and off and cause many delays due to lifts getting stuck.
