Help answer this question below.
I am not a recovering addict, but the father of two, and I have looked into this. Buprenorphene was approved for use in Europe in I think 1958, or Latest 1960 to help Heroin addicts kick the habit. As I understand it, It is finally being approved for use in the USA. It is a much better alternative to Methadone, which is just another addictive substance to replace Heroin. The reason it has taken so long to approve what is apparently considered a miracle drug by those who have used it is that a lot of people are making a lot of money keeping people on Methadone. I understand that there is a Methadone Lobby in Washington DC that has been fighting Buprenorphene since 1960. Find a doctor in Alaska that will put you on Bup, and let your higher power take you the rest of the way. God Bless You, and remember that its all in your mind.
Yes,try buprenorphene, only mildly addictive,it's only a partial agonist, but you have so much more lucidity and feel like good and normal again.I got off a 100 mg. with it in about a month.Good Luck.
Yes, it is completely possible, with a lot of work on your part, you understand? I would have a conversation with your doctor and/or drug counsellor on reducing your methadone as quickly/slowly as you all feel comfortable with, and remember it's good to be scared, it shows you have something to loose if things go wrong. I think you can do it (piece o' piss, eh?)
Good luck and I hope this answered your question : )

As a former methadone addict (which was prescribed for pain), I can assure you that it's not all in your head. The physical withdrawal symptoms are absolutely horrible, like having the flu about 10 times over plus you can't sleep for days. I kicked 80 milligrams a day in 3 months time after being on it for 8 years, but the withdrawal symptoms lasted well over a year.
